Thanks mr c, please ask in future if you would like to use one of my photos Also the fish was taken below the sewerage bridge after march 20th,which i believe is the start date for sewin and salmon down there. How do you know if the fish was kept or returned? Try and use a photo of one of your own fish next time! Jon

I have to say I don't think this is at all fair. Firstly JJ should have been asked for permission to use the picture and the context it was being used in explained. I cannot see for the life of me what the problem is. There is absolutely nothing wrong with beaching a fish in these circumstances. The fish has been caught in cold water and beached on wet slimy rocks, which will almost certainly do no harm. I suggest that the author avoids Henrik Mortensen DVD's that's for sure! In my opinion it would have been far more relevant if the website made clear the difficulties of returning fish in conditions such as we have just had in July. I think club members and anglers generally have an excellent conservation record. We should be aggressively promoting this message not getting side tracked into divisive spats on holier than thou catch and release practices.
I noticed the Salmon situation in the same section on the website. I am a bit out of touch with the river due to long term ill health, but I would like to make a few points. I know last years catch figures were very disappointing. The Ogmore is very dependent on water for salmon which was in short supply last year. Has compulsory c+r lessened fishing efforts during the autumn? Is this taken into account?

On a more relevant subject, I found a dead salmon last night in the town pool. A very fresh fish that had been gut hooked by a worm fisherman in the last few days. The salmon had escaped as it snapped the line that was hanging out of its mouth but died from the hook embedded in the top of its gut. As we have to release most fish and all salmon is it still viable to worm fish. Salmon have recently been valued at £10,000 per fish from more prolific rivers. Please try to refrain from worm fishing, especially in low water.

Phil, JJ et all I have not seen the picture in question but assume it was posted in other places by JJ and therefore in the public domain. Surely if the fish that we return are to be given the best chance to reach the spawning grounds then it makes absolute sense to take every precaution that we can to avoid unduly stressing them. Phil, you are right, Ogmore anglers have an excellent record in promoting catch and release and we can be justifiably proud of that record. I caught this fish in spawning colours several years ago and beached it on the Tesco ramp in wet conditions before releasing it. I was not carrying a net, and at the time felt little of it. I know that I did not treat this fish as well as I could have. Imagine yourself in these circumstances, would it be better to be suspended in a net by Jihadist nutters and carefully returned to normality(ransom paid)or bounced around on rocks/stones/concrete as in the example above whilst you were in absolute panic, adrenalin pumping and your only thought... escaping with your life? I suspect you would be very lucky to escape without quite a few cuts and bruises and not in the best condition. This is not C + R police....simply common sense in reducing the stress on the fish to an absolute minimum. It will have already expended some of its precious energy reserves in the fight. Thankfully "kitchen" photos are a thing of the past, attitudes change over time and to me best practice in C+R is a logical and sensible extension of this. Best Ian

IS IT NOT ABOUT TIME THE COMMITTEE MADE THE CLUB COMPULSORY BARBLESS HOOKS ? SQ there was strong support at the last AGM from the floor with regard to introducing a barbless hook bye-law. The committee will take a look at this issue in our annual bye-law review. This will be on the agenda at our October meeting.
