Recently encountered this "consultation" document has the club or anyone else been consulted about this ? Basic idea appears to be close all NRW hatcheries and prevent the stocking of Salmon and Sea trout by all other hatcheries in Wales. Any thoughts?

You needed to respond to the fools in NRW in mid may by completing the online questionnaire. They will go ahead regardless, they are cutting costs and cutting useless staff.

Rob The OAA have already taken the decision to stop stocking sea trout smolts. This is as a result of scientific evidence presented to the committee and to a meeting of the members at the Heronstone Hotel last year by Dr Kyle Young. In summary the fitness of wild populations is significantly damaged in the long term by stocking programs. Apart from that, the annual cost of rearing smolts( up to £5,000) is unsustainable in the long term Here is one of Kyle's talks if you are interested www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KjsiPTTUac

As stocking does not work and damages natural wild stocks, when the river is next decimated by pollution or fracking we will all have to go to fish the Neath or towy as members will have to wait decades for the river to regenerate itself naturally, because stocking does not work and damages genetics of wild fish. We therefore have no option or disaster plan as and when this next takes place. Kyle walker does not work at NRW formerly EA any more should you wish to contact.

If stocking with any size fish does not work, saving the club loads of money will this savings be passed onto club members with a reduction in membership fees. Lets wait and see but somehow I don't think so.

There is a very good letter on this subject in July T&S from a chap on the Wye, in fact this magazine has many regarding the EA/NRW. I agree that it is expensive, but I also believe that to sit back and do nothing is not an option. Lets see some action from the various governments to stop the commercial netting, salmon farming etc. and some joined up thinking. We could also do a lot to improve the habitat by getting rid of some of the weirs which obstruct migratory fish in low water and make them vulnerable, and eradicating fish eating avian predators.

totally agree, they need to do something ,the river has been stocking fish for years and there was always loads of sewin in the river,i believe the problem is nothing to do with stocking but its all the netting and trawling that goes on out at sea ,nothing we can do about that ,so with stocking we can at least make sure theres fish to catch.....
