A very cold and prolonged winter that lasted well into spring kept the water table temperatures well down until late july, how this affected the emerging fry we will not know for a year or so, but it did have a major impact on the Brownie fishing with sport being slow with minimal hatches right up to mid june when things finally picked up. From then till seasons end it was generally good and exellent back end.
Grayling, they seem to be in the ogmore in ever increasing numbers with fish up to 2lb being caught, they oddly have a taste for sewin flies at night!
Salmon, another poor season with numbers well down, even with the odd flood they where scarce until a shoal appeared in the tidal giving some decent sport over the last two days.
Bass, what can i say! Amazing, fish where about in numbers with a good average weight and the highlight had to be Mark Ryans 10lb+ beast that i saw safely returned.
Mullet, like the salmon, very poor year with very few about until the last few weeks of the seasom when sport picked up, normally there would be thousands down the tidal but not last year.
Sewin, they where about from opening day and phill biz kicked the season off with a fish on the 2nd of april, numbers grew through april of mainly smaller fish up to 5lb and then in early may the big fish arrived and never stopped running! Many where contacted through the season and it was common to hear big fish crashing in the pools, many of these fish ran fast, angel pool had a big shoal by 2nd week in may and around this time i saw two fish of around 5lb by pauls chippy in ogmore vale!!!
school sewin also showed again in numbers, but for some reason they stayed in the bottom end with few taken in town and above. Big fish where visible for most of the season in town, a quick look around there showed different big fish to 20lb+. Even though there where numbers of sewin about, over 200 in some pools, the fishing wasnt easy in june and early july as the very low yet cold water made it difficult and anglers where pulling their hair out as dozens of sewin jumped around them yet they only got a few takes in a night! Luckily this didnt last and from mid late july to october saw some outstanding fishing at night to the fly.
early may also saw the onset of the yet as now unidentified disease, this lasted many months and started tailing off in the autumn, it was distressing to see so many large fish affected, some over 15lb and many of them died. We can only think at how bad it could have been if the water had been warmer.
I wish you all tight lines for 2014 and i hope all these floods havnt affected the redds too adversely.
