IS THE FORGOTTEN EWEN NY TO BE STOCKED THIS SEASON. I WOULD NOT THINK POACHING WOULD BE A PROBLEM THIS SEASON AS THE RIVER IS VERY UNDER STOCKED AND I DO NOT THINK THEY WOULD BE SO DAFT.SAME ON OGMORE YOU ONLY HAVE TO WALK THE RIVER ON CLEAR WATER DAY THIS OBSERVATION FROM A GRUMPY GAME ANGLER OF 44 YEARS EXPERIANCE

I agree on both the stocking on the ewenny as well as the ogmore i have fished 5 times now since mid march from newbridge fields right down to the private strech below the dipping bridge and have failed to see or even see fish rising this season and have spoken to other anglers who have had similar reports where are the fish we are paying to catch this season?

I agree with both members about the lack of fish rising on both the Eweeny and Ogmore ,I have also fished from Newbridge fields down past the dipping bridge and still after 4 attempts failed to catch or even seen any fish rising. Before long I will have to start fishing on the lakes just to see and feel what catching a fish is like again. Please can someone explain .......either I'm a fish repellent or there's no fish....

With regards to the above posts, a few facts:
1) The river has received two stockings this season totalling 1000 fish
2) Another 1000 fish are to be stocked in due course.
3) The areas stocked are no different to those stocked historically, including the river Ewenny.
4) The stocking numbers are unchanged from the last two seasons.
5) The Association is currently stocking the maximum number of diploid fish as permitted by Environment Agency Wales.
6) Subscription fees are not used for the sole purpose of stocking the river but also for operational fees such as legal fees, insurance, river improvements etc
Also the comment regarding poachers being daft. I would suggest that this could be the root of the problem given the numerous reports I heve received regarding illegal fishing from Newbridge fields to Merthyr Mawr.
Martin if you could send me an email or letter to substantiate that the Ewenny is forgotten I would be happy to discuss your concerns at the next Council meeting.

I have caught a number of poachers in the fords area of the river it seems to be at weekends and evenings. Most have been of foreign decent and as the river is lightly fished and policed there are more opportunities to go undetected.

if these incidents of illegal fishing are not reported at the time then how are they going to be sorted out?

Boverton, Sparky, the fish have gone in and another 1,000 will be going in in due course. I spend a lot of time observing the river, not always fishing and at times of the day ranging from dawn to dusk.
It is still a little early to expect to see prolonged hatches of fly and fish rising. I also believe it takes up to 8 weeks for stock fish that are used to a daily feed of pellets to recognise the natural food available and "learn" to rise to surface bourne insects. At the moment with very bright sunny days and a northerly wind hatches will be sporadic and short. I walked the town stretch last Saturday at 7:30pm and there were fish rising everywhere. The other important factor where rising fish are concerned is a healthy and abundant supply of hatching insects. The trout will only rise if the food is there.
We will learn a great deal more about the abundance of insect life on our river through the fly monitoring initiative that is launching on May 22nd. There are still a couple of places available on the course, any member that would like to be trained, learn a great deal about what the fish are feeding on and significantly enhance their overall fishing experience Contact me via PM or give me a ring on 07872399110

I could not resist responding to such negativity, I have been out 5 times this year, I have fished areas of newmill, brynmenyn, and every area all the way down to Nichols run. Sometimes it has been very tough, having to keep moving, change flies at least six times, and changing depth and speed of retrieval. The only way to be consistently successful is to use natural flies, probably the best is the hairs ear variant or weighted nymphs. I have caught 19 brownies and 9 sewin smolts in five visits, these fish have been taken between Brynmenyn and Newbridge fields. There are plenty of fish in the river, however the more heavily fished, disturbed and poached areas will not yield much success so a change of venue is always good, the river offers outstanding fishing all the way to Blackmill, so you will need to expand your horizon and explore new places. I am happy to take out members who need help, call me on 07711299985.
