I've just joined the Ogmore after moving away to work ten years ago. Glad to be back. I am totally out of touch with tactics. Is spinning still a good option....I used to use a silver/gold vibrax number three on heavy water!!?? Can anyone please advise on fishing tactics for early/mid/late season. I used to fish from the Dipping bridge down so I am famiiar to those stretches. I have fished fly and spinner.....Thanks.

Hi Dave, Welcome back! Early season, March to May is pretty much dominated by trout fishing. A pheasant tail of GR hares ear nymph will get plenty of interest from the trout if fishing sub surface and medium olive imitations will stand you in good stead if fish are rising. Sewin don't appear in numbers until the middle of June although there are chances from May onward and if you get one it could be " a big un" Here's one of my favourite early season sewin flies and it does well for autumn fish but tied with a gold cone head. In spate conditions in the summer I will be fishing one of these on an intermediate " the spate buster" In the dog days of July and August a more subtle approach is required and smaller flies such as the Allrounder and Dovey black and orange can be very good. For salmon I have a lot of faith in this fly Mid summer trout on dries require a small tippet and very small flies(Don't have any pics but will post more when I have some) Re spinning, not my bag at all but I'm sure there are some guys on here who could help. Cheers Ian

Thanks Ian, that's a great help. Is fishing for the sewin during daytime productive? Do u have to stalk them during daytime or is it just pot luck? Just one other thing...how fast do you retreive the wet sewin/salmon flies??....or do u just let the water do the work?? Thanks...

Hi David, As Ian said welcome to the club. Good advice off Ian,hes not a bad angler (very good). When spinning I use very small mepps in the summer had quite a few nice ones. Alot of people use the flying "C" in heavy water as well as the rapala trout parr plug. Try hares ear gold heads in brown & green worked well last year in the day time, not big fish but enjoyable on 6Ib LINE. sewinfly

Thanks. Is that spinning in clear or coloured water. When I used to spin on the ogmore ( in the early 90's) it only used to be any good after a lot of rain which used to colour the water. I understand that the river has been straightened out a lot since and that the river clears a lot quicker?

The river does clear very quickly. You are right after the river is finning out that is a good time to be spinning but I have had some nice sewin in bright sunshine during the middle of the day. You never know when they are going to take. Mine were bright silver off the tide. If you out on the river give me a ring and we will meet up. www.sewinfly.co.uk

Hi there Daviid I've been reading your request for help with interest and can assist. Great information from Tuniwes.
I am a highly experienced ex-member of the Ogmore river over 3 decades. Although not a current member I know the river like the back of my hand. I can show you the water without it costing you money. Give me a shout and we can don our rubbers and explore the banks.
