I am a new member to the club along with my son and went to my first meeting on thursday. I was surprised at how hot tempered the meeting was. The committee seemed to be getting a roasting from one gentleman in particular. It was the same man who was fishing amongst the children on the day of their competition which raised my eyebrows. After the meeting i was talking to some older members who said that this gentleman went out nearly every day on the river stripping huge lures as fast as he could and boasting about catching 20 fish a time. It is no wonder he doesnt like less fish being put in the river by the committee! I also overheard a conversation that he was going on about the website during the meeting because the club did not let his son do the website and wanted to charge thousands of pounds! Seems a bit naughty to me! The club website is the most professional i have seen for a fishing club I was also annoyed how worm fisherman were being lambasted by some of the old guys there. I would never have joined my son and myself if i felt i was going to be bumping into these gentlemen on the riverbank when teaching my son how to fish with worm.

Hi Kingfisher, It's unfortunate that your first meeting was so politically charged; fishing can be an emotive sport. However, I wouldn't let that deter you from enjoying your fishing and hopefully taking a more active part in the Association as time goes on. You do yourself an injustice. Your son is the future of the Association and fishing a worm is probably the way we all came into angling; more power to your elbow I say and make sure you take your son out whenever you go. As to worm fishing being frowned upon or lambasted, I'll kindly point out that the club that you've joined is called Ogmore Angling Association and not Ogmore Flyfishing Association. I'd even suggest that there are more worm fishers in the Association than fly anglers. Fill your boots and don't be intimidated by petty snobbery; there's no room for it in angling. Since this is your first season, I don't suppose you know the name of this angler? To attempt to take fish from under the noses of junior members is diabolical. To do it during the junior competition is even worse. The reason the junior competition is run is to encourage junior members to continue with the sport. What role model is being portrayed with this behaviour! As I said previously, the junior members are the future of the Association. With adult members behaving as selfishly as this, it's no wonder that junior membership is down on previous years. Many thanks for your comments regarding the website. I administer the website for the association on a voluntary basis. I also pay for the hosting and domain registration when they come up for renewal. It doesn't cost the Association anything and hasn't done (apart from initial start up costs) for the past eighteen months. Sometimes it takes a bit of time to update, but then again, like the majority of us, I have a day job and also like to go fishing occasionally. I'm a life member of the Association and therefore don't pay an annual fee; this is therefore me doing my little bit to contribute to making the Association a better place for all it's members. Contributions for inclusion on the website are always welcome from any member. Should you or your son ever feel that you want take up flyfishing but don't know where to start, just get in contact with me via the website or send me a personal message here on the forum. I'd be more than glad to help you on your way. I'm a qualified Game Angling Coach, have plenty of equipment so that you can try before you buy, can teach you all the necessary casts, how to rig your gear, what flies to use etc. In return, all I'll ask is that you show me how you fish the worm All the best, keep drowning the worms and make sure you let us know how you and your son get on? ...............and welcome to the Association ;D ;D

I am so sorry that you and your son have experienced such a nasty meeting, with such revolting 'member' contributions.
I was away with my son in Devon, but was informed about the unfortunate and disgusting, selfish, ranting minority mob, that spent just about the whole meeting shouting in a negative way about the stocking policy for 2008.
Unfortunately a minority of members pay absolutely no regard to scientific analysis and calculations, EA directives, guidelines or laws or for that matter democracy.
The same people are not interested in facts as they choose to ignore and not listen to sense showing total disregard, disrespect and no appetite for democracy or debate.
Those same people have total disregard and no thought for others as I am sure children were present at the meeting and were probably frightened by the sickening scenes.
There should be no place in the club for members who want to undermine, and foul mouth a professional, educated and highly democratic committee.
As for the wonderful junior competition I am sure that a lot of people including myself noticed David Lewis fishing the weir in the middle of the competition, in the middle of many junior anglers. I need add nothing more to this observation.
I hope everyone can continue to enjoy the amazing fishing on the river ogmore, using whatever method, wherever they want to, and that everyone helps each other regardless.
Whatever anyone does, thinks or wants to say it is of absolute importance that nothing is discussed when junior members are present, they must be protected and nurtured rather than infected by whatever subject or dispute.
Any animosity in front of junior members will not be tolerated.

Kingfisher,
a questionnaire sent to all members last year showed that over half the membership fish with worm, so there is no need to worry about what legal methods you and your son use on the river.
I am confident that you would receive no hassle in fishing worm on the River Ogmore but if you should do, please report this to the Committee who will take immediate disciplinary action against such members.
I hope that your son and yourself enjoy your first season on the river

King fisher, i am saddened to hear about the problems you are having. its a pity that a number of small minded people think that they have the right to dictate to a club with some 4-5 hundred members when over half are worm fishermen. Do they not realize that some people can only worm fish due to age. It really does sadden me to hear that a bunch of old men have behaved so badly infact perhaps it would be good advice if they went back to primary school and learn some manners. Fish are put in for all members including worm fishermen as they do pay the same ticket fee and should have equal rights. It is also quite pathetic to hear that one individual is dragging lure through the river during a children's competition, couldn't he wait till the end of the competition? or is it the fact that the river was full of fish and he had to prove to himself he could catch a few. Its a pity your a sad bunch of individuals, start thinking of other people instead of yourselves.
over and out!

I am pleased that this subject has initiated a debate as that is what the forum is all about.
It would be a very sad day if the Association carried out any censorship of subjects on this forum as all members are entiltled to their respective viewpoints.
However should any posts containing insults of a personal nature be placed on the forum they will be removed. To this end I have edited the previous post by Golden eagle
