Having kitted myself out with a Shakespeare 6'8" 4wt brook rod with matching line and reel for the princely sum of 45 quid (taking advantage of Keens 10% discount for members) I headed upstream of Blackmill today to explore the potential for fishing for wild trout. Wow! haven't had so much fun in ages. The trout don't give themselves up and on times casting was a real challenge, under trees, bow casts, upstream downstream, the lot. I spent more time on my knees than standing up and will definately be strapping on a pair of knee pads next time ;D The trout are fiesty little chaps, totally wild and rise like greased lightening. They are not daft either if you miss one they don't come again. This one was the best of the bunch about 10", gave me a fantastic scrap on the light rod. Lovely colouring almost a different species from hatchery fish. This one slightly smaller but still a worthy adversary Our river has a reputation as an urban river and yet has miles of fishing with stunning countryside, ancient woodland and good habitat It goes to show there is an alternative to pulling stockies out at the dipping bridge with a lure. If you give it a go you will need a short rod and a degree of patience and it will test your casting but the rewards are well worth it. All the fish were returned unharmed and barbless hooks were used. Ian

Ian, Great pictures of my stomping ground at Blackmill. I can't recall you asking my Permission I hope everybody doesn't go up there now! But you are right. The first wild trout I ever caught on Corrib gave me more satisfaction than any big fish i have ever caught at a put and take venue. Likewise hooking such such a beautiful wild fish as those above give far greater satisfaction as catching a 'takeable' fish further downstream. I am sure many members do not realise the wonderful fishing we have on the tributaries of the ogwr fawr and ogwr fach.

Reminds me of my local wild water and the boxes of flies I've lost in the undergrowth - real challenging, thinking-man's fishing that.
Nice pix
