We are aware of a large number of mink sightings this season. Unfortunately these creatures do take fish, not just for food, but to play around with.
We are currently discussing the placement of mink traps and would appreciate that members report sightings on this thread in order that we can target the appropriate areas.

2 weeks ago I seen 3 mink in 5 minutes just above the dipping bridge. One thing I noticed is that the look very healthy so sadly must be feasting on our fish (and other things)

The trapping of the Mink is going well at the moment, so please keep the reports coming in. This will save me trapping areas where there are no mink and i can concentrate on the problem areas. If we can get some more traps would anyone like to help with the trapping.

Thanks i will have another run through the area, it is quiet incredible just how many are about, over 30 to date now. Considering the mink can take a fish a day every day and live for up to 7 years i will leave the maths to you as what distruction they are doing and what has been saved in the last 8 months. Please keep the reports coming in it really does help, i do respond to the reports and 9 times out of 10 get a result or two.

Went fishing on the 25th of May just before my holiday. Say one mink on a dead tree lying horizontally next to the river bank. This was basically between the dipping bridge and the bridge below where there is a stony vertical river bank at the other side. Had 5 brownies that day. One nice one of 13 inches with no blue marks but with a fin missing (so probably an aged stockie). Caught one with 2 blue dots and one with 1 blue dot. I also had a parr and 2 wild ones of 6 to 8 inches.
Cheers Taco

Dear Mink catcher,
Last Sunday, while standing next to the trash bin at the dipping bridge wandering why others find it so hard to put rubbish into it instead of dropping it on the ground, I saw a mink at the far side coming from under the bridge hopping downstream at the bank.
Later on I saw something like a wooden box mounted on the fallen tree trunk that looked a like a trap. If it is, it is positioned exactly at the location where I saw a mink that I reported seen end of May (see reply above).
I didn't do much productive fishing. Caught only one wild small brown. I went mad seeing so many sewin cruising in the pools below the white bridge in Merthyr Mawr in the afternoon. I thought, oh well, I will give it a try with a big sized fly. After 10 minutes, a silver flash and big bang on my rod and my line snapped (stupid of me not to adjust line strength, kept it to 7 lbs instead of 12 lbs). My first ever encounter with a good size sewin. I know now how that felt. Long while ago I felt such a big disappointment. Fished all afternoon with a big fly and no further takes.
Cheers Taco
