The answer is for more club members to volunteer to become baliffs and patrol the river on a regular basis.I was there the other night when we came across those knobs netting the river and for all we no this could be a regular thing further down the estuary, they legged it as soon as we got near them so it is obvious it is a bit of a deterant to them seeing us.If more people were down there regularly they would think twice about doing it.

At last someone who agrees with me I have been saying this for years and until we stand up and not buy Salmon tickets precious little will be done leaving our bailiffs open to accusations. There was an article in last months fly fishing and flytying by Mike Harding about Daves big society and doing the job for the EA

stop making it that you need a salmon licence to fish at night and everyone stop buying them we only put em back anyway, the ea would soon put a baliff on the river why should we do there job for them they are taking the p*** they were everywhere years ago nowhere to be seen now a bit of fair play needed on their behalf before someone gets seriously hurt by one of these poachers dont matter what you do the only ones they are scared of are the ea its well overdue they earned their 72 pound

The Association cannot condone members boycotting migratory licences. That is a matter for each individual as this would be a criminal offence.
However what I would say is that the Enforcement budget does not come out of licence revenue. Licence revenue is used for habitat improvements, monitoring etc.
I will leave it up to each member to decide whether they feel their licence fee is well spent on the Ogmore system.

Sorry to be a pain guys, but another problem we have, is the number of (members) who don't display there membership when fishing. I come across lots of members, or so they say, on the river fishing, and hardly any have there membership on display. A weeks ban on fishing would be a good way of implementing this rule, as not many bother about it.

A weeks ban on fishing would be a good way of implementing this rule, as not many bother about it. Can't say I agree with this Stickleback. I've fished in many different clubs throughout Wales and never had to display a permit. Llandysul AA who are arguably the leading association in Wales tried to bring this in years ago and soon stopped it as it simply proved unpopular and didn't work. In my opinion 99% of the time it's not really difficult to spot a genuine member openly going about fishing. Certainly when night fishing how on earth do you spot whether someone is wearing their badge or not without shining a light at them? If in doubt you have to ask anyway. Whatever the clubs stance on this policy, I think it is just a distraction from the real poaching problem. There are enough problems in everyday life without being lectured on the bank that you are not displaying ID when you are trying to enjoy a few hours relaxing fishing. In my view it's unworkable, not practical and definitely not in the spirit of enjoying a relaxing fishing trip. What is wrong with simply asking politely to see a permit if you are in doubt? Incidentally I got lectured on this point a few years ago by some 'well meaning' member who then proceeded to show his true colours by pushing in ahead of me with his friend and completely ruin my evening. But he was proudly displaying his permit! Seriously members not wearing badges is not the problem. If we are moaning about our own anglers, positive action to address some of the appalling fishing manners of a not insignificant number of members would be much more useful! Phil

Hi Phil, I see your point, however it really is no hardship to put it around your neck before you start fishing, and it is more likely to spoil your relaxing days fishing having to rumble through your pockets just as a silver sea trout glides past your swim, and as far as I am aware, it is a club rule

I agree with phil, genuine members who are using correct fishing methods and not sneaking about trying to hide what they are doing are easy to spot.Plus you are not issued with a new licene holder every year and with wear and tear they soon fall apart. This happened to me last year and i ended up fishing my licene out of the river.Having your licence dangling round your neck still doesnt solve the problem of poaching,if the EA are not going to do anything about it then maybe the club should employ a paid baliff??

if the enforcement budget does not come out of ea licence money why were they always patrolling all waters over the past 30 years i know of even before that and some even got assaulted im sure they were not doing it just for fun its part of there job its just another rip off,and it will ruin river fishing in time unless we do something about it if 100 members from 3 local waters stopped buying full licences that would add up to them making sure a baliff patrolled it would pay for a baliff its not a lot to ask them to do there job we pay nearly the same for rod licence as we do for ticket to fish water they been taking the **** for far too long

Stickleback, You are right that it is a club rule, though still in my opinion not one of the most practical or useful. Expanding on Walleys point, the club could be getting an awful lot more requests for replacement permits, if this rule was strictly enforced. I have tickets for a few waters and these along with my EA licence, live in a waterproof ziplock bag in my waistcoat. My view is that it really should be left to the individual and there are more pressing issues without the club making a stand on this point. However each to their own ! I don't think that this side issue should distract from the real problem we have with poaching. Phil

Going off on tangents is not the solution, the EA are finished, it is up to club members now and the police. The license fee has nothing to do with EA service, enforcement or bailiffs availability. You need a migratory license to fish for Salmon and Sewin, if any member is found in possession of a migratory fish with only a trout license they will be banned immediately from the club and reported to EA. More members need to put their hand up, stop moaning and either become club bailiffs or when they see something suspicious call all the club bailiffs available at that time, you can call me on 07711299985. Conversely there is no point in being a bailiff if you are not willing to do anything. We all need to work together.

all very well and good but if a member is banned by the association who will ensure he no longer fishes our waters and will the EA do anything? I doubt it. To get Plod to do anything positive, join the masons or become a magistrate and use your influence.

why should we do the job for them they do nothing for the club if people stopped paying this fishing tax they would soon put baliffs back on the river like they always used to,why do we have to pay rip off rates and do their job for them they must be laughing at fools like us they cant even be bothered to check their own licences and people still back them up ,if we dont make a stand now the rivers wont be worth fishing in years to come ,but they wont give a f*** they will still have their money
