Mink trapping has started again. It is this time of year that the sow will encourage the kits to leave the nest for the last time and start there lives on there own. During the next couple of months the kits will gorge to ensure they survive the winter and also double in size so please report any mink you have seen..

Is it true mink are deterred by otters? I saw a spraint on 27 Nov which I took to be an otter's not far above Brynmenyn. It was about three quarters of an inch in calibre. I didn't feel like picking it up to smell it. Sorry. Near it was a redd which was probably a salmon's, being so far down river. A couple of days before I went up the Dimbath and saw a salmon way up above the ford. It was a female I reckoned about 10 pounds, perhaps a bit more. No, I didn't disturb it. I am an ex-bailiff and was able to watch it through binoculars. It must have been waiting for a male, but I wouldn't have given much for its chances. It was easily visible from the path, and much of the time its dorsal fin and half of its bloody great tail were waving in the air, fit to attract the most short-sighted poacher. The rainy weather had stopped, levels were falling, and when I went back to-day, there was no sign of fish nor redd. When I was a bailiff, which was more than thirty years ago, we never saw salmon in the Dimbath. Plenty of sewin, some very big, but no salmon. Has anyone been putting fry up there? Best of luck with the mink. I live in Cowbridge, and although there are still ducks on the river, it's a long time since I saw a brood of ducklings.

Beechmaster,
Interesting to hear that there are such large salmon navigating the Dimbath especially above the ford. This is indicative of a steady increase of large salmon entering the Ogmore despite Natural Resources Wales stating that numbers are 'probably at risk'
The association has not stocked any fry on the Dimbath only on the main river and lower main tributaries.
The increase of salmon (albeit a poor year in 2103) coincided with the withdrawl of the Irish drift nets.
Its a pity there was no male in sight. Unfortunately like you I believe that this fish ended up in somebodys freezer

I don't know the position with the club at the moment in regards to mink trapping, but if this is ongoing a visit to the bridge in Tyn Y Garn, Penyfai (under the M4 motorway) just upriver, everytime I go out there is mink and/or minks to be seen.

Is it any wonder there is little action on this website, some people ask for a little advice and nobody replies, I reported mink on the river and nobody with any say on the matter replied, surely if committee members are not interested in the site why should ordinary members be. Probably the worst angling website in Wales if not the world. Comments from a committee member would be appreciated, there again I won't hold my breath.

I'm the person that is doing the mink trapping with great success over the last 3 years with over 60 mink to date with the last one removed last week. I was trapping in that area 3 weeks ago and had nothing over a 7 day period then had two traps stolen. If you think you could do a better job then I'm very willing to meet up, give you a couple of traps and instruct you on your legal obligation when trapping, show you the best method of putting the animal to sleep, tell you how time consuming it is and show you the best places to trap.

i agree with status on this point ANDREW is doing a tremendous job on the river, spending a lot of time, doing diferant things If penyfai has some spare time maybe he can offer his services to ANDREW to go and help him. I think the commitee are doing a good job and should be thanked for giving up there time. Thank you to all the committee

Are you lot out there real, my comments were not about what people are doing for the club, and to catch 60 mink is a great achievement due to hard work, what I was commenting on was not about that at all, if you read what I said I was commenting on the website. People are asking questions or advice and nobody is responding which is a shame, for as a forum the activity is non existent. I reported seeing mink I didn't have a clue if trapping was still ongoing as there is hardly any activity on this forum and it is only when I mentioned the forum activity did I have a response. I looks as if the committee are doing a great job but if now and then they reported back on the forum could we appreciate what they are doing. I apologise for any offence taken but if there was it was taken wrongly.

There are a lot of people in this club who do loads for the river giving up there time to do trapping and lots of other stuff and this club wouldnt survive without these people, but it was brought to notice about this website, you put up posts and it takes days to get a reply it is a very quiet website ,very strange for a fishing website it seems no one wants to have a online chat, but hope everyone is having a good season so far,i did put up a thread about the fishing but didnt get any replies.......cmon people get chatting we are all fishermen ,biggest talkers on this planet
