Yes Sewinfly,
The bridge piling is becoming very undercut. I know absolutely nothing about engineering, but is this going to turn out to be a case of a once pretty minor job turning into an unnecessary and expensive operation?
This issue with the fallen tree is quite frankly an advert as to how much time and resources the EA are currently spending on our rivers. Personally I think that this whole episode highlights the fact that while we can pressurise the EA, the reality is that such work needs to be undertaken by the club. The alternative would appear to be waiting for month upon month for any practical help from the EA. I realise work such as removing trees will cost money, but surely maintaining the river would be money well spent? If club fees needed to be increased to help cover this sort of work, I would be all in favour, if the outcome was that maintenance issues were quickly tackled.
I am certainly not being critical of the committee, when they point out that this work falls within the remit of the EA. They are right, and it makes my blood boil that I see so little practical action for my rod licence fee. However the situation at the moment could be likened to if a lorry dropped a load of litter outside your house. You can moan about it being the councils job to remove it, but if you want the job done and can't stand looking at it, you end up just doing it yourself.
Anyway, just my thoughts on this issue. As I have been getting on my high horse regarding river maintenance issues, I should hold my hands up to not attending clean up days. Although problems like this one look beyond the capabilities of a few volunteers.
All the best
Phil
