There is a fallen tree across the pool above Nicolls Run by the hump back bridge. From one side of the bank to the other-needs moving!!!!!!!!!! Will need chainsaws and a tractor to move it.

Had the unexpected pleasure of bumping into two EA baliffs at the dipping bridge today and asked them to raise the issue "at base."
Both of the trees are serious obstructions, and will impede the path of migratory fish.

could everyone who has contributed call the agency hotline to tell them that both trees are blocking the river, the more people that call will surely prioritise the job, which will be very big.

Ian, Nice to here that you ran into a couple of EA baliffs on the river and well done for having a word about the obstructions . I saw the tree for myself today from the humpback bridge and its quite a size to say the least. From your post I assume that the club are reliant on the EA to deal with obstructions such as this. Do we as a club have to wait for the EA to act, or is it a question of the logistics / expense of getting hold of a tractor and chain saw operators etc? Just a bit concerned that with the EA's track record being what it is, we might be waiting a while! All the Best Phil

With regards to the trees that are currently across the river. These have been reported to the Environment Agency. Unfortunately from past experience, these will not be removed imminently.
The issue of the Association removing such obstructions and the associated costs wouuld not be a problem. But if we did it of our own accord once............................................!

Contacted the E.A. about the trees above Nicolls run, cannot give an idea when they are going to be removed but they will contact me!!! wait and see.
It also looks as if another tree is going to fall looking at the angle!! At the moment the run is unfishable, can Merthyr Mawr Estate help in the removal ?

Sewinfly,
I share your frustration with regards to the fallen trees. The Association certainly has the resources to remove these obstructions. The problem is that we are increasingly doing more and more on behalf of EAW. If we begun to remove such obtructions we would set a president. Nevertheless I will discuss this important issue at our next Council meeting.

E.A. phoned me yesterday and will look at the trees in 4-6 week's due to workload they cannot be any earlier. Also it was stated that the removal is not down to them but the landowner ? he understood my frustration of not being able to fish the pools due to the trees. It has been classed as low risk due to the fact it will not cause flooding!! I explained to him when the river is in flood that both trees will be up against the bridge with their branches trapping all the debris during a flood and this will hold the water back.

The fallen tree has been carried roughly 50 yds into the bridge. Perhaps this will encourage the EA to act? View from bridge upstream towards Nicholls run. A real mess! View downstream from bridge. With the threat of more high water to come, this can't be doing the bridge much good. It shows imo the importance of getting on with maintenance issues such as this. Problems like this only tend to get worse. Phil

Not only is that a mess but also it now poses a danger to any river users, hopefully the EA will now act to mitigate this risk.

Thank you for posting the picture above.
I will email the picture to the Team Leader for the Bridgend area at the Environment Agency.
Maybe when I state that the Dipping Bridge is a listed building they may act!
